Random CoC Rules Questions
I figure this is a good place to ask these questions about the system, since Trom and I are total nubs in regards to it. Also because I'll probably forget these questions by the next session.
SO!
1. Are there rules for body armour/bullet-proof vests? Is it like DR or something?
2. Are there called shots?
3. What are Cthulhu's stats?
I swear I had more...especially non-combaty ones. Hmm. Oh well.

Re: Random CoC Rules Questions
Armour reduces damage. A bullet proof vest removes about 8 points of damage.
Called shots will exist, try to do them and the DM will rule it on the fly.
I don't know his stats, but I believe merely seeing him is a 1d20/1d100 sanity check. That's success/failure.

Right. Hmm.
So, there's magic in CoC, yeh? I vaguely know about it.
1. How's it work? I think I remember reading somewhere that it costs you SAN to cast spells...or just learn them? Where does Power come into the equation? Does it determine spell strength/duration/number of spells?
2. Are zombies badasses or chumps (stat-wise, compared to an average human if a standard is needed)?
3. Besides weapons with the impale (I think that's what it's called?) quality, what else can get "critical" hits?
4. What do you roll if you jump out of a window from high up? Jump (seems obvious but I dunno...)? Luck?
5. Can attributes ever change/improve, or are they completely static?
6. If you have a firearm/projectile weapon, can you spend a turn/however long is required aiming at a target and get any kind of accuracy/sniping bonus to your roll?
7. Are there mechanical rules for drugs?
8. How much damage does a nuke do?

Re: Random CoC Rules Questions
ERM. ok, this is a good idea -
so. riiight. you are talking to less than an expert as im still getting the hang of it again but ill try. - there are some though (ie monster stats) that shouldnt be answered as things are scarier when you have no idea what they are capable of.
so:
1) magic (IF it exists) is quite simple, anyone can do it (no class type restrictions) but characters with good POW scores are likely to be better at it. different language skills may be the most important thing to have though. (arabic and latin are good btw) dont really want to say any more than that really, it'll spoil the suprise.
2) zombies? there arent any zombies in the world are there? thats crazy talk.
3) any sharp type puncture weapons can impale. clubs, bricks, shotguns (pellet rounds) cannot. a d100 result that results in 1/5th of the required counts as an impale, hence x2 damage dice. so, for instance,
your medium sized .30 cal rifle. base chance is 25% if you get a 05 or lower you will do (2d6 x2) for 4d6. at point blank range (your dex in meters) the base chance goes up to 50% and a roll of 12 or less will impale. - trom was very lucky.
4) jump indeed. its 1d6 per 10ft drop, (11ft is 2d6). a successful jump roll allows you to roll 1d6 and take that off the damage.
5) yes, although this is custom rule territory. aging chances stats, it kicks in from 40 years old. if you live in the gym during the campaign things like str and con can certainly improve. quite a bit too id say.
6) yes, if you have a weapon that is worth spending extra time aiming with. the combat round goes like this, each stage is in dex+d10 order.
1. folks with guns loaded and ready. (ill rule cocking a weapon applies a -2 to your dex+d10 roll.)
2. folks who need to draw weapons, and melee attacks.
3. folks who have already gone at stage 1 and have further shots. OR folks who passed up their shot at stage 1 and have been aiming instead.
aiming has the effect of doubling the weapons base range and point blank range, but ONLY applies to rifles. ( i would consider allowing some aiming for SMGs or rifled shotgun rounds.)
telescopic sights also double the base range, added to aiming can work out to x4.
7) poisons yes, not seen anything for drugs.
bleh.

No nukes. I already tole you... if you nuke Cthulhu, you just piss him off and give him a special irradiate attack.
Impale? POW? This is all starting to smell like an evolution of the Runequest rules.

Re: Random CoC Rules Questions
well spotted, it is dude,
runequest's percentile based system was the first from chaosium in 1980, they adapted it for CoC in 1981.
incidentally we're using 5th ed CoC (1992), there was a 6th edition in '04, no idea what its like but i presume its similar.

Re: Random CoC Rules Questions
How about grenades? Are there wonky rules for 'em like in Shadowrun, with randomizers for location/direction/bounces?
Are there rules for knockdowns/trips? How about modifiers for being prone?

Re: Random CoC Rules Questions
aye.
the answers are easy though, they are:
no, no, no and no.
although if you succeed in a grapple you can pull them down right away. not sure if that counts...

Re: Random CoC Rules Questions
You know, all of us apart from Trom are online, pity we can't do any RPGs
Re: Random CoC Rules Questions
yesss. the CoC doesnt really lend to less than a full compliment of players at the current stage.
but i wouldnt rule it out forever, its a case of getting a campaign settled down. then its possible.

Re: Random CoC Rules Questions
I know, I was just saying. I guess I'm bored and have nothing to do, so seems like a good time to play RPGs to me.
Oh btw, I fixed me phone for the time being, so it's back online.
The recharger itself is fucked, not the phone, I reckon I should be able to keep it going for a couple of months.
Hey. If you bring the CoC book around my house, we can scan in the important rules/equipment pages and keep them online.

Re: Random CoC Rules Questions
Dude, I already sent you a fucking live video of that shit. Do you have any idea how much elephant rental and rectal cleaning costs in Canada?
Re: Random CoC Rules Questions
Maybe in the sexual-socialist wonderland that is the UK, but here in good ol' HONEST Canada, we like our cars fast, our women hot, and our elephants rectally clean.
Re: Random CoC Rules Questions
We should look up to your countries high standards and seek to emulate our frosty frozen western brothers!
